I got taken...
I got a guy to do my sprinklers in my backqyards and he didn't finish the job. I approached me when I got home and his timing was perfect. I paid a portion upfront and he took his time finishing the job. I fired him eventually and got someone else. A licensed contractor makes a big difference.  You pay a little more but it is well worth the extra bucks.

LOOKING FOR anyone that had dealings with James (Painter - I
had a contractor at my house, he actually was the only one who answered his phone right away and was able to right over (sign right there something is wrong) when he showed up, he seemed very nice and proceeded to tell me he does lots of things, not just painting.  Well, then my list went on.  He gave me prices for everything and then we signed the deal about a week later...STUPIDLY, gave him 2 large deposits that he happend to cash right away (another sign).  Work was horrible, he dropped people off to do the job and he was off to other jobs.  When the first problem arose, several days later he showed up to do some work for about 1/2 hour and then said he would be back in 3 days....why?  I had lots of rooms to be painted!!!  Well, I fired him and wanted my money back...had and am still  having a very hard time getting the remaining money back.  Did manage to get alot of it back, but want the rest.  Through a background search, i learned, he filed bankruptcy, is not licensed or insured, has 7 liins against  him for tons of money...most of the people are customers and 1 the IRS.  He advertised in the Long Island, NY Pennysaver with a company name of Island Services and his name is JAMES.  If anyone has had an issue with him, please contact me...I am sure we can help eachother!  Thanks!  And everyone out there, PLEASE always get referrals and check the licensing of the contractor and DO NO give large deposits...give deposits as needed...finish this job and I give deposit for next part of job, etc!

you responded to my ad about a contractor who did work for you back in Sept.  He took deposits but never finished the job, and I had the same problem with him.  Please contact me so we can discuss this further.  blr530@verizon.net

Amazed ...almost
I'm a licensed contractor, with over 15 years of experience. I'm amazed, almost at what you all have gone through. The construction industry is full of all kinds of people. I just want to encourage anyone who's going to hire someone else to work on their home to do your homework! Check the BBB, check out the business license information at the state license board, and always hire someone legit!

And yeah, I have to plug myself here...if you're looking for a reliable, trustworthy and honest contractor-I'd love to prove I'm the guy! I don't charge huge deposits, I'm American made, I've been around and I'm not going anywhere, and I'm ready to put in some honest work for you! Check out my new website at http://www.paytonconstruction.webs.com I hope everyone on here is able to find a good contractor-regardless of if it's me or not!

RE - License isn't everything
You can't solely judge if they have a contractors license or not. I've found out that its okay if for a contractor to have a license himself, but then he takes your money and never shows up personally for the job. It's legal for them to delegate the work to someone else. Well not in my eyes. I pay you to do a job then I want you to do it, not some worker of yours. You got to ask them if they're going to do the work themselves. Better yet, make sure you get a reference from someone you trust.

Sorry you had a bad experience jlynn. Contractors sometimes are their own worst enemy. Any decent contractor would always oversee the work they have delegated. Also, they can only use licensed tradesmen, irrespective of whichever classification they hold. The delegated sub MUST be bonded and licensed by the CSLB, and if he has employees, then workers compensation certification must be current. The reprocussions for homeowners who indirectly allow workers to ply their trade on their property, without thoroughly verifying their workers compensation is current, are mindblowing. Without sounding patronising- all homeowners must carry out due diligence- or face TERRIBLE consequenses. To sum up- always use the CSLB to check current license # and bond. Then call the number on their workers compensation certificate- to see if they are currently insured, as some shady contractors have been known to cancel their policy- but show the certificate to homeowners which is tantamount to fraud, and a fellony. Please protect yourselves homeowners.
